Dell’s PowerEdge R640 aims to offer a balance of storage, processing power and rack density, and in this exclusive review we show you the first look at the new 14th generation 1U rack server. Of course, Intel’s Xeon Scalable family is at the top of the agenda of Dell, and the new internal cooling design allows the R640 to support all CPU models up to the 205W 28-core Platinum 8180.

Storage options are equally impressive as the chassis is available with four LFF drives, eight SFF drives or ten SFF drives. There’s room for two more SFF drives in the back in an optional hot-swap cage, and the server can support up to eight PCIe NVMe SSDs out of the box.

All hard drives are handled by Dell’s 10th generation PERC controllers that have 8GB of flash-backed NV cache—four times the amount from the previous generation. The new H740P and H840P SAS3-ready adapters and Harpoon’s RoC (RAID on Chip) provide increased performance to handle high IOPS SSDs.

All 14th generation PowerEdge servers feature Dell’s new iDRAC9 controller, which offers a completely improved web interface and a wealth of new features. Platform security is also tight and includes cryptographically signed firmware packages as well as a lock mode to stop unauthorized changes to system settings.

Dell offers many backup options so make sure you choose the right one to prevent future updates. All three Smart Flexi Value models are available with eight or ten SFF drives, with only the standard model supporting four LFF drives.

The SFF models offer two backplanes and an 8-bay version that supports SAS3, NL-SAS and SATA hard drives. We’re looking at the 10-bay version – which you need if you want to use PCIe NVMe SSDs alongside SAS3 hard drives.

Xeon Scalable processors increase the number of PCIe lanes from 40 to 48, and Dell’s NVMe implementation takes advantage of this. The 10-bay backplane is connected to a SAS expansion board behind it, but there’s also an internal NVMe port that connects directly to the motherboard.

These use eight additional PCIe lanes, allowing you to connect up to eight NVMe drives directly to the front panel without the need for additional adapters. Mind you, they are not cheap; Dell’s mixed-use 3.2TB NVMe drives cost more than six grand each.

Dell’s BOSS card (an enhanced boot storage solution) eliminates the need to install an operating system on a hard disk. Included in our review system, the BOSS is a PCIe adapter card with two M.2 SATA SSD slots that support mirroring.

There’s a lot going on inside the R640’s busy interior, but all cables are neatly tucked away for easy access to essential components. There are eight heat-sealing fan units on the front of the motherboard, and for NMVe drives and high-end processors, you’ll need to specify high-performance models.

This price includes the PERC H740P Mini snap-in RAID unit. This supports all the usual RAID suspects including RAID6 and 60 and has 8GB of NVRAM cache and a well-placed battery pack on top.

Our system came with 192GB of 2, 667MHz DDR4 memory expandable up to 768GB with RDIMM or 1.5TB with LRDIMM. The R640 also supports up to twelve continuous NVDIMM-N memory modules that combine 16GB of high-performance DRAM with built-in Flash backup and use a dedicated battery backup that fits over the SAS expansion board.

Up to three PCIe expansion slots are available, and under their cage is a dedicated slot for a Dell network daughter card. We were given two Gigabit/10GBase-T models and other options are quad Gigabit, quad 10GbE SFP+ or dual 25GbE.

Dell’s new IDRAC9 is a winner for remote management as its smart web interface with HTML5 provides real-time information about server performance. The dashboard screen provides a quick view of the overall health of the system as well as quick access to logs and a virtual remote control panel.

The system tab shows everything you need to know about power consumption or cooling and provides performance graphs for CPU, memory and I/O usage. Enabling System Lock Mode prevents further configuration changes and you can use the System Wipe feature to safely erase data on unused drives.

The Dell scored higher than HPE’s iLO5 and the Quick Sync 2 feature we used to connect our iPad to the server via Bluetooth. The OpenManage Mobile (OMM) iOS app allowed us to see all the server details, receive notifications, reboot and control it with the free VNC Viewer app.

Dell’s OpenManage Enterprise isn’t expected to be released until mid-2018, but while you wait, you can use the free OpenManage Essentials software. We used it to control all of our Dell network devices, perform calculations, and activate its advanced alarm system.

The PowerEdge R640 packs a lot into its 1U chassis and also offers innovative storage features. Support for the entire Xeon scalable processor family means it can be easily adapted to suit different workloads and budgets, while the new iDRAC9 controller sets new standards for server management.
